Your self-care journey
We are all so unique! Even if they share the same values, age, race, and gender, 2 people dealing with similar issues will experience things in different ways. It depends on so many factors like, to name a few, upbringing, relationship status and family circumstances, socio-economic status, position in family sibling order, cultural norms, life experience etc. ‘Well-being’ means different things to different people and it could also be that you are facing temporary challenges that require focus on a particular aspect of your self-care practice. And, so, our self-care priorities in any given point in time may look different for us and from others. It’s a unique personal journey!
The ‘Self-care Tips’ offered here are universal and all aspects require attention to achieve balance and live well but it could be that there is one area that requires more focus at the moment. There’s nothing all that new here in these tips; perhaps just a gentle reminder that self-care is so important and some info and ideas on how to get (re-)started on prioritising yourself!
Take time to think! As a little experiment, a variety of cover images are offered to help you with the start of your journey. The content inside the Tips remains the same for all; it’s just the covers that differ. Each image in the collection below links to the ‘Self-care Tips’ and you’re invited to choose the cover which speaks most to you in terms of health and well-being. Reflect on your choice and see if it offers any ‘aha’ moments for you…
Start here
Select a cover from the 14 options in the slideshow above – you can view them together in the full set of the collection below, each with a link to the Tips document to download. As you select your cover, reflect on what it is about the cover that attracts you. What is it that drew you in? What speaks to you? Is it
- the colours
- the design – the look and feel?
- the content – the environment or activity showcased? The textures, season, or element?
If it’s the colours which attract you, you might be interested in exploring the meaning and psychology of colours. It could provide some insight for you into what you need in terms of self-care. There’s a helpful and quite comprehensive guide here and a quick overview below.
Reflect on what those colours mean to you! Are they colours that give you inner peace, inspiration, a sense of well-being? Are they colours you have in your home? In your wardrobe?

If it’s the design and/or content, maybe this will be a fun and interesting exercise for you. Below is a list of adjectives. Which of these most relate to your chosen cover? Choose 3-4 or more if you wish. Are there any words missing for you?

What’s your love language? Fill your love cup!
Reflect too on your love language. Our love language is how we show the people we love that we love them and how we like to be loved. They say there are 5 basic types, first developed by a Dr. Gary Chapman. If you’re curious, you can watch his interview with Oprah here. There’s an interesting article on love languages here as well. But we’re not here to work on relationships with others but with ourselves and what relationship could be more important. It is the longest relationship we’ll ever have. So, think about how you like to be love and love yourself in your own love language! There’s even a little quiz here you can try. Everyone has a primary love language but, hey, why not treat yourself to all types and see how good it feels?
- Words of affirmation – look in the mirror and tell yourself you’re beautiful!
- Acts of service – prepare yourself a healthy, green, crunchy salad for lunch!
- Gift giving – treat yourself to something that you love e.g. flowers or a book!
- Quality time – indulge in some quality ‘me time’ e.g. a walk or a long bath!
- Physical touch – hug yourself and your loved ones and go for a massage!
